A teacher fighting hobby fomo. A Warhammer Underworlds and Age of Sigmar Spearhead blog…

Finding myself building some AoS models these days, I realized one thing:
Oh boy, do I hate basing nowadays…

Having build only Warhammer Underworlds models in the last few years and using 3d-printed bases for my frostgrave war band, it seems I lost touch with the harsh reality of building classical war-game armies. The Warhammer Underworlds war bands – arguiably one of the best range of models GW has ever put out there – come with fantastic predesigned bases. Not only are they at times full of details such as rats running in gutters, but they also directly pose the models in a cool, predetermined way. And more importantly, for an old man with a non-hobby life out there and stupid work trying to ruin the hobby life, they save me a lot of time! I don’t need to think about an unique design for the war band, no basing material, no pva glue and stupid sand everywhere… Just pure heaven!

Don’t get me wrong, I love building terrain and I loved to design bases. In fact, back in the days I sculpted myself a whole Sotek temple bases range for my lizard men and put a lot of money in cool looking chaos bases for my Slaanesh demons. However, that was before life hit hard with the ‘you are a grown man now’-hammer. I would even go as far as to say that, even assembling models nowadays is becoming more of a hassle. While it was cool to pose every goddamn Daemonette in a unit of 25 of these demon b*tches, making them look unique and requiring me to number their position in the unit tray in order to fit them in it, I come to realize, that these snap-fit poses are a huge time saver. With units or war bands of much smaller size than in Warhammer fantasy battles, repetition is not an issue any more. Imagine my frustration when I opened my Gloomspite Gitz Spearhead – yes…fomo…- just to realize, that it includes the same gorkdamn night goblin models I sold ten years ago when I quit the game.

The A song of ice and fire – or song or asoiaf as the cool kids say – miniature war-game even comes with pre-assembled miniatures. From a temporal aspect, it is a gift from the heavens. You can open the box and literally start playing immediately. No “let’s play in two weeks, when I assembled and based my 25 gobbos, 3 trolls and 10 and squig hoppaz..”.

How times are changing…
